Everything You Need to Know When Visiting Angkor Wat

Greetings, fellow adventurers! As part of our mission at SoulShine Travels, we aim to illuminate your journeys with knowledge and inspiration. Today, we're diving into one of the most awe-inspiring destinations on the planet: Angkor Wat. This ancient temple complex in Cambodia is a treasure trove of history, culture, and architectural brilliance. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit to Angkor Wat.

1. Understanding the Significance of Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is not just a temple; it’s the heart and soul of Cambodia. Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, it originally served as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu before transitioning to a Buddhist site. This UNESCO World Heritage site symbolizes Cambodia's cultural heritage and is an enduring testament to the ingenuity and spirituality of the Khmer Empire.

2. Planning Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Angkor Wat is during the dry season, from November to March, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. The months of April and May can be extremely hot, while the rainy season from June to October brings lush landscapes but also potential downpours.

Getting There

Siem Reap is the nearest city to Angkor Wat, and it’s well-connected by air to major cities in Southeast Asia. From Siem Reap, the temple complex is just a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride away. Consider hiring a knowledgeable local guide to enhance your experience with historical insights and lesser-known facts.

Take a jouney to Angkor Wat via tuktuk! Hang on and enjoy the experience!

Entry Passes

A visit to Angkor Wat requires an entry pass, which can be purchased at the main entrance to Angkor Wat. Passes are available for one day ($37), three days ($62), and seven days ($72). Remember to bring your passport for identification when purchasing your pass.

As of 2019, you can purchase a pass online. Once paid by credit card, a ticket can be downloaded and can be shown in digital or printed form at any checkpoint within the Angkor Wat.

3. Must-See Highlights of Angkor Wat

The Central Tower

The central tower, representing Mount Meru, is the highest point of Angkor Wat and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The climb is steep, but the reward is worth it.

Bas-Reliefs

The intricate bas-reliefs depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Spend time exploring these detailed carvings to appreciate the craftsmanship and storytelling.

The Moat and Outer Wall

The expansive moat and outer wall provide a majestic entrance to the temple complex. Take a moment to walk along the causeway and absorb the grandeur of the site.

4. Tips for a Memorable Visit

Sunrise and Sunset

Experiencing sunrise at Angkor Wat is a must. Arrive early to secure a good spot and witness the temple's silhouette against the rising sun. Sunset is also a beautiful time to visit, with fewer crowds and a serene atmosphere.

Dress Code

As a sacred site, Angkor Wat requires respectful attire. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the complex is vast and involves a lot of walking and climbing.

Stay Hydrated

The Cambodian heat can be intense, so bring plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout your visit. There are vendors selling refreshments near the entrance, but it’s wise to carry your own supply.

Photography

Angkor Wat is a photographer’s paradise. Be respectful of other visitors and the sanctity of the site. Tripods are allowed, but be mindful of where you set them up to avoid obstructing pathways.

5. Exploring Beyond Angkor Wat

Angkor Thom

The ancient city of Angkor Thom, with its iconic Bayon Temple, is just a short distance from Angkor Wat. The smiling faces of Bayon and the impressive Terrace of the Elephants are must-see sites.

Ta Prohm

Known as the “Tomb Raider Temple,” Ta Prohm is famous for the giant trees and roots that have enveloped the ruins, creating a mystical and photogenic scene.

Banteay Srei

Located about 25 kilometers from the main Angkor complex, Banteay Srei is known for its exquisite pink sandstone carvings. It’s a bit off the beaten path but well worth the visit.
